Jan Brett, considered one of G.P. Putnam’s Sons brightest stars, is renowned for her picture books that annually climb to the top of the best-seller list. The admired children’s author/illustrator decided as a child that she wanted to be an illustrator. “I remember the special quiet of rainy days, when I felt that I could enter the pages of beautiful picture books.” Now, Brett tries to re-create that feeling in her own stories. Her highly detailed paintings and illustrative borders, rich in cultural narration from the various locales her books explore have received international attention and recognition.
The exhibition welcomes all ages into the vivid cultures and endless imagination of these timeless children’s tales. “When you look at my illustrations I hope they take you to a different place and time,” Brett said. “Every illustration has a dozen stories behind the brushstrokes.”
“The World of Jan Brett” encourages playful exploration in hands-on discovery areas and immersive environments. The exhibition features more than 50 original paintings from ten of Jan Brett’s bestselling books, including “Gingerbread Friends,” “The Umbrella” and “Honey … Honey … Lion!”
“A picture is never finished until I feel I can walk into a page.” Jan Brett
The World of Jan Brett is a traveling exhibition organized and traveled by the Oshkosh Public Museum, Oshkosh, WI in partnership with Jan Brett. The exhibit’s display at the Fort Collins Museum of Art is part of a nationwide tour.
